ETF Prime: ProShares’ Simeon Hyman Breaks Down Autocallable ETFs

Autocallable ETFs can deliver income tied to stock market risk rather than interest rates, according to Simeon Hyman, global investment strategist at ProShares. Hyman joined ETF Prime host Nate Geraci, who also spoke with Todd Sohn, chief ETF strategist at Baird Strategas.Key Takeaways: Autocallable ETFs pay income tied to stock risk, with principal at risk only in steep market drops. ProShares’ autocallable ETFs ladder new notes weekly to spread out risk and smooth income. Sohn calls ETF adoption the story of the year and sees white space in active thematic funds. Hyman explained that an autocallable pays a regular coupon and returns principal at maturity unless the underlying index falls below a set level. Investors traditionally bought them as individual structured notes, which made it hard to spread out risk. ETFs help solve that problem. ProShares launched three autocallable ETFs in August, including the ProShares S&P 500 Auto Callable Income ETF (ACSP). Each fund adds a new note every week, building a ladder of 52 to 156 notes to smooth income, Hyman said. Those notes currently yield in the high teens, which appeals to Baby Boomers and Gen Xers without traditional pensions. A 60/40 portfolio with bonds yielding 5% to 6% generates only about 2% to 2.5% overall. That is “not enough for people to run their lives on,” according to Hyman. The trade-off is equity risk, since investors can lose principal in a steep market drop. For that reason, Hyman places autocallables in a portfolio’s equity sleeve or treats them as an equity alternative.Sohn Calls ETF Adoption the 'Story of the Year'Taking a wider view, Sohn named the “continued full-blown adoption of the ETF” as the year’s biggest story. Geraci noted that nearly 1,200 ETFs have launched this year, a record, while inflows have topped $1.7 trillion. Sohn called sports futures ETFs the wildest idea, saying they would “float around like jellyfish” after the season ends. He was more open to prediction market ETFs that hedge binary outcomes like elections or economic data. Contracts on whether Patrick Mahomes throws three touchdowns are another story. Beyond those exotic launches, Sohn sees the most white space in active thematic ETFs. More than 100 thematic funds launched this year, many tied to AI and chips. An active manager can adjust if a dominant company stumbles. That human oversight could matter in a downturn. If markets fall sharply, Sohn expects many small “zombie” ETFs to close, much like in 2022.Listen to the Entire Episode of ETF PrimeFor more ETF Prime podcast episodes, visit our ETF Prime Content Hub.
