This ETF Simplifies Commodities Investing

With oil prices high and gold slumping, chances are many uninitiated investors are hearing plenty about commodities this year. All that attention is stoking fresh interest in an asset class some experts believe merits heftier allocations in investors’ portfolios. Commodity ETFs are attractive starting points for both advisors and market participants new to this asset class. But not all of the funds in this group are carbon copies of each other. Selectivity is crucial. And for investors demanding breadth, the USCF SummerHaven Dynamic Commodity Strategy No K-1 Fund (SDCI A) is a solid option. The actively managed SDCI is a futures-based ETF. And there’s no denying individual commodity futures can be volatile. But that turbulence can also create opportunity. “That volatility may be attractive to investors seeking diversification, since commodities do not always move in line with equities or bonds, though correlations can rise during market stress,” noted Saxo. “But it also represents a risk. Commodities do not generate ongoing income like dividends or interest, and they may be exposed to sudden shocks, from natural disasters to political events.”SDCI Makes Commodities Investing EasyFor better or worse, many novice investors view commodities as a complex asset class. Maybe it’s roll dates or professional traders’ use of leverage, or the differences between futures and spot price, or another factor. However, ETFs such as SDCI reduce those burdens for end users. “Understanding commodities is less about predicting quick gains and more about seeing their vital role in the global economy, shaping industries, influencing consumer prices, and linking financial markets with the physical resources of the natural world,” added Saxo. SDCI offers advisors and investors an array of advantages. Those include active management, which may be advantageous in a market as broad as commodities. Said differently, many investors who are new to the commodities complex don’t realize just how vast this landscape is. Fortunately, SDCI makes things easy by presenting investors with a broad commodities basket, ensuring they needn’t engage in potentially hazardous selection of individual commodities. “The commodities market is a vast, interconnected system where raw materials are bought and sold. Unlike stock markets, which deal in company shares, commodity markets trade physical goods — either for immediate delivery on the spot market or for future price exposure/delivery via futures, options and OTC forwards or swaps,” concluded Saxo.
