Amazon Prime Sale, Emmys Streaming Deal Put XLY in Focus

Amazon Prime members began shopping a 48-hour sale Tuesday as Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) kicked off Prime Big Deal Days. Cruise operators Carnival and Royal Caribbean posted the biggest five-day gains among XLY holdings. XLY’s 1.3% five-day gain ranked fourth among State Street’s 11 sector ETFs. Also on Tuesday, the Television Academy and Prime Video announced a six-year deal making the streaming service the exclusive global home of the Emmys, Reuters reported. Starting with the 2027 ceremony, the awards show will no longer rotate among broadcast networks ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC. Streaming services have increasingly taken on live events and awards shows as more viewers watch online, Reuters noted. Similarly, the Academy Awards will leave ABC and stream live on YouTube worldwide starting in 2029. Both announcements reach beyond Amazon’s own shareholders. Amazon makes up 23.29% of the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY A), according to State Street. That’s the fund’s largest weight, ahead of Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) at 18.61%. Together, the two stocks account for nearly 42% of the ETF. XLY rose 1.3% over the five trading days through Oct. 5, closing at $110.42, according to State Street. Overall, XLY had $21.5 billion in assets across 47 holdings as of Oct. 5, according to State Street.Cruise Stocks Outpace Amazon Inside XLYTwo cruise operators led XLY over that five-day stretch. Carnival Corp. (CCL), for example, jumped 15.5%, according to State Street. Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) followed with a 13.4% gain. Those are small positions, though. State Street data shows Carnival at 0.89% of the fund and Royal Caribbean at 1.88%. Tesla also beat Amazon’s pace, climbing nearly 6% over the same five days, according to the tracker. XLY’s largest industry group is hotels, restaurants, and leisure at 25.72% as of Oct. 5, according to State Street. Broadline retail, which covers sellers of a wide range of goods, follows at 24.49%.
