Bright Commodities Outlook Could Spark This ETF

Amid two ongoing hot wars involving major energy-producing countries — the war in Iran and the Russia/Ukraine conflict — the commodities arena may appear to be a hazardous place for investors to allocate capital. But recent pullbacks by some commodities-linked equities could prove to be buying opportunities. That may be one reason to consider the ALPS CoreCommodity Natural Resources ETF (CCNR ) before the end of 2026. The Actively managed CCNR, up more than 19% year-to-date, removes the stock-picking burden for investors seeking commodities exposure via stocks. It’s a compelling strategy for advisors and investors to consider This is particularly so when some experts are seeing the commodities complex as ripe for more upside in the coming months. “Artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and electrification underpin the long-term outlook for industrial metals like copper,” said UBS. “Forecasts suggest a near 80% probability this year’s El Niño reaches “very strong” or “super” rating by year-end and a 97% chance that it persists into 2027.”CCNR CatalystsUBS endorsed active management as a way to tap commodities. But the Swiss bank also noted breadth is important when embracing this asset class. Good news: CCNR checks both boxes. “Commodities should continue to play a prominent role in portfolios, offering diversification amid supply-demand imbalances, geopolitical risks, and the global energy transition. We like broad commodity exposure, with an active approach amid still-elevated volatility,” according to the bank. Home to nearly $441 million in AUM, CCNR is a sound idea for market participants who want more exposure to the material and energy sectors. Those are among the smallest sector exposures in broader gauges, such as the S&P 500. The ALPS ETF devotes 80% of its weight to those two sectors. That makes it an efficient vehicle for investors who want to overweight those groups. While CCNR is heavily allocated to just two sectors, its concentration risk is minimal. That’s because none of its holdings exceed allocations of 1.51%. And that’s something to ponder at a time when many cap-weighted broader market indexes are heavily concentrated in a small number of stocks. Plus, CCNR is geographically diverse, providing exposure to stocks hailing from more than two dozen countries. Those traits could work in favor of long-term investors. “A diversified, regularly rebalanced exposure is the simplest way to capture most of the asset class’s benefits, while selective tilts can add value when conviction is high,” added UBS.
