How Equal-Weight ETF GSEW Beat Its Category Average YTD

Valuations are high and concentration risk remains a major factor for investors to consider. Yields are reacting more to Anthropic’s rumored financial data than the Fed, and that tells a clear story: The market is squarely focused on AI. Looking under the hood, however, there are broadening opportunities. An equal weight ETF like the Goldman Sachs Equal Weight ETF (GSEW B+), up YTD, can provide diversification and performance at a key moment for investors.Key Takeaways: The equal-weight ETF GSEW looks to balance around 500 names in its tracked index. The fund has outperformed the ETF Database Large Cap Growth Equities category on a YTD basis. Returning 13.7% in that time, the fund can mitigate concentration risk and still perform in portfolios. GSEW charges a 9 basis point fee to track the Solactive US Large Cap Equal Weight Index. In doing so, the strategy aims to maintain a balanced exposure across the approximately 500 names in the index. Rebalancing monthly, the fund equally weights firms of differing market caps. Together, that has helped the equal weight ETF deliver this year. According to ETF Database data, GSEW has returned 13.7% YTD and 14.4% over the last three years. That has seen the fund outperform its ETF Database Large Cap Growth Equities category average in both those periods. That shows that, even while limiting exposure to key names in tech that have helped drive huge moves for markets, an equal weight ETF can still deliver. Avoiding that concentration risk, too, offers real advantages. While AI remains a key driver of innovation and growth that merits exposure, it is not without risk. Capex concerns around data centers, for example, continue to loom. What’s more, should conflict with Iran spike again, driving oil higher, the other segments of the economy could struggle. That may empower it to capture upside if the market were to broaden further. At the same time, its performance alone makes it a helpful contributor to overall portfolio goals.
