REX Shares & BMO Launch 3X Leveraged Corporate Bond ETNs

Volatility from shifting Fed expectations and geopolitical events in today’s current environment creates an ideal backdrop for active bond traders. That said, the Bank of Montreal and REX Shares have expanded their MicroSectors product lineup with a recent launch of four new exchange-traded notes (ETNs) on the Cboe BZX Exchange: MicroSectors 3X Long High Yield Corporate Bond ETN (HYGU), MicroSectors -3X Short High Yield Corporate Bond ETN (HYGD), MicroSectors 3X Long Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETN (LQDU), and the MicroSectors -3X Short Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETN (LQDD). The launch comes after recently debuting leveraged-inverse semiconductor ETN products just last week.Key Takeaways: Bank of Montreal and REX Shares launched four MicroSectors ETNs (HYGU, HYGD, LQDU, LQDD) offering the first U.S.-listed 3x leveraged long and short daily exposure to high-yield and investment-grade corporate bond benchmarks. The products track VettaFi fund-tracking indexes designed to replicate the daily performance of major fixed-income ETFs, specifically HYG for high-yield corporate debt and LQD for investment-grade bonds. Intended strictly as short-term trading tools rather than long-term buy-and-hold investments, these leveraged ETNs allow active managers to capture intraday credit moves or hedge portfolios against rising interest rates and default risk. The suite links directly to VettaFi fund-tracking indexes that mirror two of the fixed-income market’s largest and most liquid ETFs. HYGU and HYGD track the VettaFi High Yield Corporate Bond Fund-Tracking Index, which replicates the daily returns of the iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG A-). The fund is designed to reflect the broad market performance of high yield corporate debt. Simultaneously, LQDU and LQDD track the VettaFi Investment Grade Corporate Bond Fund-Tracking Index to provide amplified daily exposure to the iShares iBoxx $ Investment Grade Corporate Bond ETF (LQD A). Accordingly, the fund provides broad exposure to investment-grade corporate debt.Who Are These ETNs Designed For?These ETNs are short-term, daily trading tools designed only for experienced investors to manage risk. As such, these products aren’t ideal for long-term buy and hold strategies. Because leveraged ETNs reset performance expectations daily, holding them over longer horizons introduces compounding risk as well as volatility decay. In trending or choppy markets, this can cause performance to deviate significantly from three times the return of the underlying index. That said, these ETNs are highly sensitive to index changes, and require active intraday monitoring. Holding them beyond a single day demands frequent re-evaluation. Again, these products are built for sophisticated traders, institutional desks, and active portfolio managers who need short-term tactical tools to trade macroeconomic trends with precision or to hedge current positions. Traders can use HYGU or LQDU to capture rapid intraday rallies driven by dovish central bank policy shifts or tightening credit spreads. Conversely, HYGD or LQDD can be used to hedge corporate bond portfolios against rising interest rates, expanding credit default risk, or economic decelerations without using complex derivatives contracts.
