Space exploration continues to captivate the minds of the general public and investors alike. For the latter, a recent VettaFi webcast examined the space economy as an investable opportunity: Why You Should Make Room For Space in Your Portfolio. The webcast featured Procure ETFs CEO Andrew Chanin, who highlighted the opportunity set in the space sector.During the webinar, an audience poll highlighted a persistent market misunderstanding regarding launch economics. When asked to estimate the current cost of placing one kilogram into low Earth orbit, 50% of respondents selected outdated figures of $10,000 (26%) or $40,000 (24%). Forty-five percent correctly identified $2,700, which is the actual current benchmark cost. With lower costs comes increased competition to capture market share in this growing space economy. In turn, this creates investable opportunities, such as the Procure Space ETF (UFO ).Key Takeaways: A 95% collapse in launch costs has transformed space into a $686 billion global industry where commercial revenue accounts for 79% of the total market. Recurring revenue is primarily generated downstream through ground infrastructure, satellite connectivity, positioning, and data analytics integrated into defense, telecommunications, and logistics. UFO offers targeted, pure-play exposure across this expanding ecosystem, capturing satellite equipment, imagery networks, and defense hardware backed by durable sovereign spending. Today, commercial revenue accounts for 79% of the total space market. This is due to the fact that lower deployment costs convert former sci-fi concepts into viable corporate balance sheets. Rocket launches capture mainstream headlines. But the bulk of recurring commercial revenue is generated further down the value chain. Ground infrastructure, satellite connectivity, earth observation, positioning, and data analytics are increasingly integrated into critical real-world industries, including defense, telecommunications, logistics, agriculture, and insurance. In short, space is permeating society’s everyday lives, but it may not know it just yet.Sovereign Demand & Frontier InnovationBeyond commercial applications, Chanin noted that sovereign and defense spending serves as a durable long-term tailwind for the sector. The U.S. Space Force budget request is approaching $71.2 billion and space-based interceptor programs are gaining traction. So defense procurement provides multiyear revenue visibility for defense tech contractors. Looking forward, emerging subsectors are positioned to expand the addressable market of the space ecosystem further. Specifically, this includes orbital edge computing, space-based solar power, lunar infrastructure, and orbital debris remediation. The key metrics for prospective investors remains launch cadence and cost efficiency. These enable downstream applications to scale profitable business models. For investors seeking targeted exposure to this ecosystem, Chanin discussed the UFO ETF in greater depth. The fund provides a pure-play allocation to the companies driving and benefiting from the expansion of the space economy. Rather than focusing solely on launch providers, UFO offers a diversified strategy spanning satellite equipment, defense hardware, imagery networks, and space-based communications, allowing portfolios to capture diversification across the entire space value chain.
