Commodities Are Back as DBC, PDBC Break to 52-Week Highs

For a while now, the story in bonds has been “higher for longer”, a reality underscored as the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield holds firm near 5.0%. The government keeps issuing debt at a rapid pace, inflation hasn’t fully cooled off, and the AI infrastructure boom is soaking up massive amounts of capital. With bond investors left dealing with the highest rates in about a decade, one sector that they can look at as a potential savior is commodities.Key Takeaways: The Invesco DB Commodity Index Tracking ETF (DBC A-) reached a new 52-week high near $33.80, marking roughly a 50% surge from the beginning of 2026. The ETF’s momentum is fueled by a mix of persistent energy market pressures related to the Iran war — such as Brent crude touching $109 a barrel — and structural material demand from the AI infrastructure boom. Broad futures baskets provide financial advisors with an efficient, non-correlated real-asset hedge against sticky inflation when traditional stock-bond allocations face pressure. Invesco’s two broad commodity futures ETFs recently hit 52-week highs. The $2 billion Invesco DB Commodity Index Tracking ETF (DBC) just broke out to a high nearing $33.80 per share. This marks a gain of nearly 50% from its 52-week low of $21.98 in October of last year, according to VettaFi data. Similarly, DBC’s actively managed counterpart, the $7.9 billion Invesco Optimum Yield Diversified Commodity Strategy No K-1 ETF (PDBC A-) hit a 52-week high of $20.17, up from its 52-week low of $13.10. Financial advisors rethinking allocation in a choppy market have a fresh reason to look at broad commodities, and the breakouts of DBC and PDBC make that case very well. DBC tracks the DBIQ Optimum Yield Diversified Commodity Index Excess Return Index, offering exposure to 14 of the most heavily traded physical commodities across energy, precious metals, industrial metals, and agriculture. The fund, which has an 0.84% expense ratio, has returned 50.13% year to date and 15.84% for the past three months. Meanwhile, PDBC has an expense ratio of 0.59% and seeks to outperform the same index that DBC tracks.Beyond Inflation: What's Driving DBC and PDBCThe funds’ recent 52-week high are a reminder that inflation risk hasn’t gone away, but there are other factors that are contributing to that upswing. Energy is a big part of the story, particularly with Brent crude recently hitting $109 a barrel. Since DBC and PDBC hold oil and other energy futures alongside metals and agriculture, a spike in crude flows directly into the fund’s performance. Demand is also adding to pressure on the supply-side. According to recent analysis about DBC’s performance, demand for commodities used in AI infrastructure, which can include industrial metals and the energy needed to power new buildouts, gives the fund’s rally support beyond geopolitics alone. The question for advisors and investors is where DBC and PDBC fit. Commodities have historically followed different return drivers than stocks and bonds, and they often respond to the same supply shocks that fuel inflation. As recent VettaFi analysis explored, many advisors are looking beyond single-asset plays to build out dedicated real-asset sleeves in the 5% to 15% range. DBC and PDBC’s broad futures baskets offer that exposure without a concentrated bet on one commodity. Rising energy costs, growing demand for AI infrastructure, and lingering inflation concerns have put commodities back in focus. For investors, DBC and PDBC offer a way to gain exposure to a broad basket of commodities as these forces continue to shape markets.
