Inflation Calls for Real Assets & Global Infrastructure

Investors and central banks alike have been tangling with the threat of inflation for the better half of 2026.Key Takeaways: Given the persistent nature of inflation, real assets are offering a potent inflation case due to their inelastic demand. Among real assets, global infrastructure can provide a compelling combination of yield, total return, and diversification. BNY Investments offers its own take on global infrastructure exposure through the BNY Mellon Global Infrastructure Income ETF (BKGI A-), which invests in both traditional and nontraditional infrastructure companies. To make matters worse, it’s not particularly likely that inflation will necessarily abate any time soon. Geopolitical risks continue to persist, and high fuel prices continue to keep the cost of living up. Many are expecting the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates once more in the coming months. Furthermore, the trajectory on where inflation goes from here remains relatively uncertain. With this in mind, how should advisors and investors look to tackle this from a portfolio construction perspective?Global Infrastructure: A Real Solution to InflationA potential solution is to lean into real asset exposure. As just one example, take a look at the global infrastructure industry. See More: BNY Investments’ ETF Suite Breaks Past $20 Billion in AUM As real assets, infrastructure companies offer more tenable, structural demand than other securities on the market. These companies can more easily pass costs on to their customer base, given the essential nature of the services they provide. Additionally, global infrastructure companies can provide a compelling combination of income and capital appreciation—all of which can perform well amid rising costs. “They offer a combination of characteristics that much of the market lacks: the potential for yield, capital appreciation, diversification, and inflation protection through an inflation linkage—the ability to adjust prices in line with inflation,” noted BNY Investments in a recent article. “When prices rise, many of these businesses can pass costs through to consumers via regulated returns, contracted revenues, or index-linked pricing. The result can be cash flows that tend to hold up, and can even benefit, when inflation runs hot.” See More: Inflation Isn’t Gone Yet: Give Real Asset ETFs a ChanceBKGI: Blending Traditional & Nontraditional InfrastructureFor those looking to build up exposure to the global infrastructure industry, the BNY Mellon Global Infrastructure Income ETF (BKGI A-) could help. BKGI is an actively managed fund from the BNY Investments team that provides a distinct take on the global infrastructure industry. Generally speaking, many global infrastructure funds tend to focus on traditional infrastructure industries, like energy, utilities, and industrials. BKGI looks to broaden its opportunity set by also investing in nontraditional infrastructure industries, like real estate, healthcare, and communication services. By investing in both traditional and nontraditional infrastructure companies, BKGI can access more industries and avenues for yield and total return. This approach has resulted in BKGI offering an impressive progress report thus far. As of October 12, 2026, BKGI has a subsidized 30-day SEC yield of 4.52%. In terms of total return, BKGI’s NAV has risen 11.71% over the past year, as of September 30, 2026. For more news, information, and analysis, visit our Portfolio Strategies Content Hub.
