Municipal Bonds' Momentum May Call For Active Management

Given the current state of inflation and interest rates, investors may consider what fixed income assets they truly exposure to. For example, municipal bonds prove compelling.Key Takeaways: With investors considering how they want to tackle fixed income these days, municipal bonds are offering a compelling opportunity for tax-efficient income. An article from BNY Investments explained how active managers can better navigate the complicate municipal bond universe to find market inefficiencies that indexed strategies are missing out on. Advisors and investors can access BNY Investments’ approach to muni investing through a fund like the BNY Mellon Municipal Opportunities ETF (BMOP). One area of the fixed income marketplace that advisors and investors may want to consider looking at these days is municipal bonds. After all, muni bonds currently offer a compelling route to after-tax income. A recent article# from the BNY Investments team took a closer look at what’s going on with municipal bonds. The BNY Investments article assessed that investors may actually be overlooking the opportunities within municipal bonds, despite what munis currently bring to the table. According to the article, municipal bonds are providing significant income potential, with yields sitting around their highest levels since 2008. To be specific, AAA-rated municipal bond yields are sitting around 7.9% for those in the highest tax bracket. This is on a calculated tax-equivalent basis. An experienced active team can be better positioned to navigate the vast range of readily available municipal securities. “Many municipal bonds are small issues spread across local governments throughout the U.S. As a result, comprehensively covering the full market can be difficult, particularly for investors without significant resources,” the BNY Investments report added. BMOP is an actively managed fund that leverages its active management to provide interesting municipal bond coverage. The fund’s investment philosophy works like this: at least half of BMOP’s assets go into bonds that are investment-grade or higher at the time they were purchased. Inversely, BMOP can pursue additional yield by allocating up to 50% of its remaining assets into high yield bonds. This is where the benefits of active management and security selection can come into play. An opportunistic fund like BMOP could be in a good spot. It can take advantage of inefficiencies within the muni market that indexed strategies are falling prey to. In the meantime, those who are investing in this fund have been able to enjoy solid yield opportunities. As of November 3, 2026, the fund has a 30-day SEC yield of 4.36%.
