Is It Time to Cozy up to KORU Again?

There’s no shortage of stocks that provide risk-tolerant traders with excitement. Plenty of ETFs accomplish that objective, too. But there are differences between garden-variety excitement and skydiving-type thrills. The Direxion Daily South Korea Bull 3X Shares (KORU B-) is certainly in the latter category. The recently split leveraged ETF attempts to deliver 300% of the daily returns of the MSCI Korea 25/50 Index, which is to say this is ETF is a short-term instrument, not a buy-and-hold investment.Indeed, KORU is given to breathtaking gains and declines. On a split-adjusted basis, the ETF’s 52-week high is almost $64. It closed below $21 on Tuesday, August 25, but it’s still higher by a jaw-dropping 16.76% for the week ending August 25. That may be a sign that Korean stocks, the most famous of which are at the center of the artificial intelligence (AI) trade, are on the mend. There’s a Case for KORUFor traders that can handle the leverage associated with KORU while remembering that the fund is best used over a day or a few days, there may be compelling reasons to give this fund a look. Joon Seok, Morgan Stanley’s Chief Korea Equity Strategist, said that the South Korean economy is on firmer ground, and that could be supportive of equity market gains outside the tech sector. “The broader Korean economy offers support. Real GDP growth has exceeded 3 percent for two consecutive quarters up sharply from 1.1 percent in 2025. Full-year growth is now likely to land in the mid-3 percent range; and generally, Korea’s growth is around 2 percent,” noted the strategist. “Importantly, the improvement is spreading beyond exports. Consumption is recovering, tourism has surpassed pre-pandemic levels, and the government is targeting 23 million foreign tourists this year.” For traders banking on near-term upside for KORU, tech is the likely facilitator of the ETF’s fortunes. However, broadening of upside participation in South Korea could also spark the geared fund. Plus, it doesn’t hurt the cause when South Korea remains home to an array of quality earnings growers. “Korea still has room to run. But the stronger signal may be quality – meaning earnings resilience, disciplined capital management and broader participation. The stock market’s initial rally was fueled by speed and concentrated leadership. The next phase will require wider and more durable support,” added Seok.
